4 Ways to Cleanse in the New Year
Change your habits to eat right in 2014
As 2014 approaches, it is common for people to set goals to become healthier, especially after all that feasting during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Before planning your new diet, take a look at these foods to embrace or avoid, healthier substitutes for caffeine, beneficial herbs and spices, and foods to cleanse the body.
1. Eat more fruits, vegetables and nuts
Currently, 69 percent of adults in the U.S. are overweight, including the 36 percent who are obese. The Harvard School of Public Health conducted a study concerning weight and diet, which found that people who increased their intake of fruits and vegetables during the study’s 20-year period gained less weight every four years.
Other studies found that nuts, which are high in protein and fiber, delay the onset of hunger, making people more likely to eat less. When eaten in moderation, the best nuts for weight loss are almonds, walnuts and cashews.
2. Grab an apple, not coffee
While many people start the day with a cup of coffee or black tea, apples actually provide more energy and, unlike coffee, will not make you crash. In addition, vitamin B12 in the morning wakes you up. If your diet is mainly plant-based, use soy or almond milk that has been fortified with B12. If you eat animal products, eggs and yogurt both contain B12.
3. Add these healthy herbs and spices
When you cook, there are many different herbs and spices you can add that will benefit your health. For instance, adding turmeric may aid in slowing the growth of cancer. Ginger has been shown to have the properties of antioxidants, which inhibit inflammation. In addition, cinnamon has been shown to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. If you use any of these spices, you will be healthier and your food will taste better.
4. Detox by eating
A number of foods will strengthen your immune system and help flush out toxins. Lemons burn fat, provide vitamin C and contain antioxidants. Garlic helps to detoxify your liver and increases white blood cells. Kale cleanses your gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, drink enough water and cranberry juice to rid your body of toxins.
